Last night the crew was given approval to conduct a night EVA to test and determine capabilities at night. Commander Miller and Mission Specialist Turner were able to get a good assessment and completed a perimeter check. The crew then woke early today to complete another EVA with the rover so Mission Specialists Malnack and Turner could use a couple of laps around the perimeter to get more familiar with driving and docking the vehicle. Due to the late night and early morning, they were able to rest for a bit in the afternoon before continuing their daily tasks.
Malnack’s MRE study is almost over, and he was going to have two left at the end of the mission, but he just loves them so much that he will use them all! On the rover EVA this morning he was able to view some effects of the recent strong winds which is helpful for understanding how different materials will affect the sustainability of a Martian habitat.
Turner completed her next CardioBreath session today, even after having performed late-night AND early morning EVAs. Her GreenHab plants are under some stress due to the high North Dakota summer temperatures. She has upped her watering to ensure they are frequently receiving light amounts of water. Several plants have positively responded to the additional support.
Commander Miller’s media uploads finally stressed the communications system, so large data file transfers will be halted for the rest of the mission. The crew has provided so much great documentation which we are all excited to see.
The mission is winding down, and it will certainly be nice to have the crew back on Earth! Stay tuned for MD11.
